FRIENDS
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS
Artist Statement:
Friends is a side-scrolling game where the main objective is for players to be in a close proximity with their friend. Besides just being a physical proximity, the distance also represents the emotional proximity between friends. Furthermore, players will have to balance between the friend's conversation and their own daily life activities in the game. There is no end goal aside from achieving the main objective — the game ends when the player or his or her friend moves too far off from each other and leaves the screen, signifying the end of the friendship. In other words, the game can only end when the friendship ends. Consequently, it mirrors the situation where we may struggle to sustain or build friendships amidst our busy lives, where a constant effort is required to keep ‘in the game’. As such, “Friends” aims to evoke reflections on the nature of friendships and specifically how once started, without a constant effort on both sides to maintain it, friendships have the tendency to fall apart overtime.
This game is made for a school project in NUS under the Module Code NM4227 - Playable Art.
